"It is time for a reset. We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The people of Sudan need peace and equitable access to humanitarian relief. And the international community must step up today, engage at all levels, and act to put Sudan back on track and end the war" - Statement by Principals of the IASC
The Situation
Prior to the conflict, the Sudanese people were already suffering from a humanitarian crisis. Now, the crisis is deteriorating rapidly and thousands are continuing to flee to neighbouring countries in search of safety, food, and support, including at least 450,000 children that have had to flee their homes.
- The number of people displaced by conflict since 15 April inside and outside of Sudan has reached 8.1 million
- More than 6 million Sudanese are on the brink of famine
- More than 14 million children are in need of humanitarian aid and more than 50% of the total population needing some form of humanitarian assistance.
- Over 690,000 children under age 5 are severely malnourished, an additional 2.7 million are moderately malnourished, and over a million pregnant and lactating women are estimated to suffer from acute malnutrition.
- Prices of food, fuel and other basic goods are skyrocketing, making critical goods unaffordable for many people and leaving close to 20 million people food insecure with millions surviving without necessities such as food, water, electricity, and shelter.
- Access due to insecurity remain the greatest challenges for both humanitarian aid and civilians alike.
