We are glad to share Nutrition Information in Routine Reporting Systems. This landscape analysis conducted by UNICEF Regional Office for Eastern and Southern Africa provides an insightful review of the nutrition data reported through national routine information systems in 21 countries of the region.

UNICEF’s systems approach to maternal and child nutrition stresses the importance of strengthening routine information systems. Reliable and timely data are crucial to assess progress in reducing malnutrition in all its forms, inform the formulation and implementation of nutrition policies, strategies and programmes, make budget allocation decisions, and improve decentralized management capacity. The analysis highlights the importance of using standardized indicators; creating dashboards for easy review of information at national and sub-national levels; and investing in strengthening the capacity of district level staff on nutrition information systems.

We hope that this report will be useful to guide investments on national information systems beyond Eastern and Southern Africa. Lessons from this region can help other regions and countries to better monitor their nutrition programs and be accountable for the outcomes affecting the lives of millions of children, young people and women, everywhere.
