Remembering Basra Farah Hassan, 1954-2014

Three years ago our friend and colleague Basra Farah Hassan was killed in a terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Basra was a nutritionist, one of very few Somalis who specialized in human nutrition. At the time of her death, she was an employee of UNICEF and was working in Kabul as the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator. Basra devoted her life and career to improving the health and nutrition of the most vulnerable mothers and children both in her direct environment and internationally.

It is in Basra’s memory that her family established the Basra Farah Fund for mothers and children, an organization that honors her name and intends to continue her work. It is our hope that Basra’s humanitarian legacy lives on through this charitable organization. The Basra Farah Fund (BFF) is registered, as a non-profit organization, in Chino Hills, California.
