On 27 – 29 May 2014 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) hosted the Symposium on Understanding Moderate Malnutrition in Children for Effective Interventions in order to help bridge, on the one side, recent research findings and technological advances with, on the other, operational approaches and policy development processes.

The symposium convened over 350 individuals, the majority of whom represented government responding to moderate malnutrition in their populations; nearly 70 national and international organisations from the United Nations and non-governmental sectors, universities from around the  world, as well as donor governments and private sector entities. The Global Nutrition Cluster Coordinator as well as other GNC partners attended the symposium.

The symposium was structured around nine sessions over a 3-day period, progressing from a global analysis of the scale of the problem to recent research findings relevant to designing effective interventions. A number of papers have been compiled, based on the presentations made at the symposium. These will be published separately in a special issue of the Food and Nutrition Bulletin, with Dr Eileen Kennedy as the special Guest Editor.

The proceedings of the MAM Symposium are uploaded to the  website: http://nucleus.iaea.org/HHW/Nutrition/Symposium2014/index.html, where you will find for download the report and a statistics summary with attendance figures of the symposium and the results of the participant evaluation.

Please also note that the recorded live streams of the four days are uploaded, by session and individual presentation, as well as the presentation pdfs of those who gave permission. Other materials, such as pictures, articles, interviews can also be accessed on the same MAM Symposium page on the website.

IAEA are currently working with ENN on setting up en-net to continue discussions emerging from the MAM Symposium.  This will allow exchange on some key questions that could not be fully addressed during the symposium.
