Objectives of the Side Event

The GNC side event seeks to bring together a focused group of participants, including EU COHAFA member states with representatives from: DEVCO and EEAS; Humanitarian Rapporteur; EU Parliament; INGOs actively engaged in the two countries; donors and UN agencies (UNHCR, UNFPA, WHO, FAO, WFP, OCHA, etc.)

The overall goal of the meeting is to assess progress, challenges and identifying practical mechanisms that provide support to the countries in scaling up the nutrition response while progressing in Grand Bargain commitments/New Ways of Working.

Specific objectives are:

  1. To identify successes, challenges and bottlenecks in responding to immediate needs in Afghanistan and DRC as well as to implementing a long-term transitional strategy to sustain programmes.
  2. To identify successes and to examine opportunities improve progress in relation to New Ways of Working and Grand Bargain commitments with focus on: the humanitarian and development nexus; localisation; multi-year funding.
  3. To discuss actions to address the structural and programmatic challenges to delivery of a comprehensive package of nutrition interventions through strengthened national systems, while ensuring the humanitarian imperative is upheld.
  4. To as advocate for enhanced engagement of donors and the international community to support a comprehensive nutrition approach in Afghanistan and DRC.

Outcome of the Side Event

A call for action for partners and donors detailing how the two countries can be supported to strengthen nutrition structure and systems, with specific practical steps to bridge humanitarian and development policy and programming.
