Save the Children is recruiting an Emergency Nutrition Advisor to provide technical expertise and leadership in the strategic innovation area of the Management of At Risk Mothers and Infants (MAMI). Since 2013 Save the Children has joined partners in the MAMI Strategic Interest Group (SIG) in piloting this community-based approach for managing nutritionally vulnerable infants under six months of age through early identification and community-based management. In an effort to support the wider uptake of this life saving approach, Save the Children is initiating a capacity building and mentorship program to provide MAMI technical assistance to operational partners interested in adapting the MAMI approach in various contexts.


The Advisor will provide MAMI technical expertise, mentorship and guidance to implementing partners in determining the need for MAMI programming and designing a contextualized response. The Advisor will deploy for approximately 35% of the time to support partners in the field.  When not on deployment, the Advisor will remotely support implementing partners and global MAMI initiatives.  The Advisor will liaise directly with key stakeholders such as the MAMI SIG and the Global Technical Mechanism for Nutrition in remotely responding to MAMI related queries, linking partners with resources and sharing learning.


What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  • Provide technical expertise, mentorship and guidance to Save the Children and partners on the management of nutritionally vulnerable infants, specifically the Management of At Risk Mothers and Infants (MAMI) approach. (50%)
  • In collaboration with the MAMI SIG, support the development, review and revision of evidence-based program standards, guidance, and tools for MAMI (20%)
  • Contribute to the MAMI learning agenda through design of monitoring and evaluation systems and synthesizing, document and disseminating program learning through publication, presentations and trainings (15%)
  • Contribute to strengthening global partnerships in MAMI through close coordination with the MAMI SIG and GTAM, contributing to global MAMI priorities; participate in internal and external coordination for as relevant (10%)
  • Support resource development through provision of technical support to the development of quality emergency nutrition project proposals and contribution to the definition of fundraising priorities for MAMI (5%)

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in nutrition and/or public health.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
  • Advanced level of technical knowledge, skills, and international experience in a related field of public health to provide technical advice and guidance related to the management of nutritionally at risk infants and their mothers (ie Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), Integrated Management of Childhood Illness, Newborn Care, Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM))
  • Demonstrated experience and high acceptability in working with government, clusters, NGOs, and donors.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully working across multiple sectors,
  • Fluency in written and oral English required.
  • Excellent writing, oral and visual presentation skills; training skills
  • Able and willing to travel internationally up to 35% of the time


Preferred Qualifications

  • Working location in Washington, D.C. preferred
  • Master’s degree in nutrition, public health, or related development studies
  • Previous international experience in the care of nutritionally at risk infants (<6m), specifically the MAMI approach or exposure to the “care of the small and sick newborn”
  • Working knowledge in one other language (French, Spanish and/or Arabic) preferred
  • Proven teamwork, partnering skills (facilitating dialogue and communications across diverse sectors, institutions, and geographic administrative levels)
  • Ability to assess priorities and competently complete a variety of activities with a high level of accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to initiate and implement activities with minimal oversight and supervision.
  • Critical thinking; strong interpersonal skills, ability to define situations, document data, and draw conclusions
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
